1915 – The Powell River Farmers’ Institute (PRFI) is founded to “improve conditions of rural life so that settlement may be permanent and prosperous.” At the turn of the century it is impossible for individuals to purchase dynamite so the farmers of Powell River come together, form the Farmers’ Institute and are able to purchase dynamite to assist in the clearing of their lands to support livestock and agriculture.

1932 – The Cranberry Ratepayers and Community held their first successful Fall Fair.

1933 – The Powell River & District Horticultural Society is founded as a result of the previous years’ successful Fall Fair and the fairs continue during the fall of each year.

1936 – The name changes to The Powell River & District Agricultural Society (PRDAS). Assets are transferred at the same time and the Fall Fair carries on. The Society continues to promote the culture of fruits, vegetables and flowers in Powell River.

1939 – After 7 years of successful Fall Fairs, PRDAS takes a hiatus as WWII starts

1954 – PRDAS resumes and continues to provide the community with unforgettable Fall Fairs at the Willingdon Beach Arena and sponsors the Miss Powell River competition until 1976. When the Arena closes in the 70’s the Fair moves to the Recreation Complex and takes over the two skating rinks to put on exceptional Fairs.

1982 – PRDAS holds its last Fall Fair at the Recreation Complex and then takes a 5 year sabbatical.

1987 – PRDAS relaunches the Fall Fair at the Paradise Valley Exhibition Grounds on McLeod Road. The focus of the Society expands to not only promote the Fall Fair and the local 4H club but also helps to administer the Paradise Exhibition Park and begins sponsoring the Open Air Farmers’ Market. Successful Fall Fairs continue with more of an outdoor focus and plenty of space to allow the Fair to grow.

2015 – PRFI celebrates 100 years in Powell River. After decades of success PRDAS faces a year without a Fall Fair Coordinator. As a placeholder “A Fall Affair” (scaled down version of a Fall Fair) is held.

2016 – Discussions begin about the consolidation of efforts between the PRDAS and the PRFI to better be able to help grow and support farmers and agriculture in our region.

2017 – The Powell River Farmers’ Agricultural Institute (PRFAI) is formed, resulting from the amalgamation of the Powell River & District Agricultural Society and the Powell River Farmers’ Institute.
