According to Statistics Canada, in 2016 the average age of a Canadian farmer was 55.

While we’ve been fortunate to have a rich farming history in Powell River, it’s exciting to watch the shift happen towards the next generation of farmers. Young farming families are working the land, building greenhouses and taking on the responsibility of feeding the community.

Each summer we see more and more kids bringing produce to the Powell River Farmers’ Market on their Sunday “Kids Market” days (12:30pm – 2:30pm). Children who grow their own produce are welcome to come and sell it at the market. Over the past few years we’ve seen a remarkable increase in the fruit and vegetables being grown by this young generation.

If you’ve got desire but not the means to have a farm, there are plenty of community gardens to get you started, both in helping, planting and managing growing spaces as well as harvesting and enjoying the fruits of your labour. If there are specific skills you’d like to develop, you can contact us and we can help match you up with someone locally.
